Lab Blog’s 8 & 9

Lab Blog 8:

General Overview

Exporting the maps was not an issue in the least bit. It is important to crop the maps as closely as possible in the paint program

so unwanted lines do not show up in the places you will be putting them.

Lab 9 Blog:

General Overview:

Any of the three websites for making GIFS from the overview of the lab will work, it is important to download the pages and save the GIFS from the internet. That was the only real issue I faced.

REALLY IMPORTANT WHEN USING FILEZILLA:
Make sure when posting anything on the filezilla server that it is being posted to the public HTML page and not your personal page. This can be found on the top left section of filezilla after clicking on your personal page name (ex. pahuron).

Lab Log 7 (part 2)

dotdensitymap3

  1. dotdensitymap2
    1. General Issues
      1. Coming up with a map classification scheme.
      2. Through Trial and error, I slowly came up with a scheme. I created mine manually but there are features that will create them automatically.
      3. Making the dots show up on the dot density map.
        1. Can be fixed by selecting which option you are attempting to illustrate from the drop down menu.
      4. Results:
        1. I selected a dark blue color scheme for the background of the dot density map because it is a color usually indicated with the state.
        2. I then selected a light blue color scheme so that the dots can be seen from a distance.
        3. For the Proportional symbol map, I used a lighter blue background with different shades of gray circles for aesthetic purposes.
        4. For the graduated color map, I chose a variety of red, orange, yellow and green to indicate the different percentages of change. These colors are eye-catching and easily understandable for the message I am trying to convey. I chose the green color for least percentage change because most of my population has little change and most of the state is covered in forest.

Issues with Lab 5:

Transferring dbf file into ARC GIS. Important to remember to stick little apostrophes in front of the FIPS code numbers in excel before transferring it over to open office.

  • Other General Issues:
    • using the field calculator when creating new columns in the table on ARC GIS.
      • Important to precisely copy and paste the numbers onto the calculator.
  • General Discussion:
    • Huge emphasis on precision in this lab.
  • Notes
    • Nothing of note.

Definitions:

  • .DBF / Dbase file: a file format typically used by database software. DBF stands for DataBase File.
  • Select by Attributes: allows you to provide a SQL query expression that is used to select features that match the selection criteria.
  • Query: a request for data or information from a database table or combination of tables.
  • Fields (in a Table): a collection of related data held in a structured format within a database. It consists of columns, and rows.
  • Records (in a Table): a database entry that may contain one or more values.
  • Attributes: a piece of information that determines the properties of a field or tag in a database or a string of characters in a display.
  • Relational Database: a database structured to recognize relations among stored items of information.
  • Join function: The join() method is a string method and returns a string in which the elements of sequence have been joined by str separator.
  • Monitor Fire: the state of combustion in which inflammable material burns, producing heat, flames, and often smoke
  • Calculate / Field Calculator: a tremen- dously useful but sometimes overlooked tool. It can eliminate the tedious process of manu- ally entering values in a table or create new data from existing data in a table.

Notes from this lab:

Adding layers to a map can be accomplished by clicking on the black cross and golden square at the top of the page.

  • Map Document (.mxd files)
    • specifies the set of map layers contained in a map along with the map layout elements and their display properties used to present GIS datasets
  • Table of Contents
    • a list, usually found on a page before the start of a written work, of its chapter or section titles or brief descriptions with their commencing page numbers.
  • Data Frame
    • generally refers to “tabular” data: a data structure representing cases (rows), each of which consists of a number of observations or measurements.
  • Map Layer
    • a GIS database containing groups of point, line, or area (polygon) features representing a particular class or type of real-world entities such as customers, streets, or postal codes.
  • Attribute Table
    • corresponds to a certain zone of cells having the same value. In a GIS, attribute tables are often joined or related to spatial data layers, and the attribute values they contain can be used to find, query, and symbolize features or raster cells.

Two interesting things I learned about ARC GIS:

To view maps within maps:

Click on the world icon at the top of the page (full extent)

To make a scatterplot:

View>Graphs>Scatterplot matrix

Two cool Maps I found on the website:

http://webapps-cdn-dev.esri.com/CDN/page-templates/products/map-cookbook/night-sky.html

http://lahub.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/index.html?appid=7279dc87ea9e416d9f90bf844505a54a

Initial Thoughts of ARCGIS:

The software is really cool, quite confusing but I’m excited to learn more. Examining the maps that have been made with the software make me excited to learn more!

Lab Log 3, Sep 22nd

  • General Issues
    • manually inputted 2010 and 2017 list onto spreadsheet in lab 1
  • Discussion
    • No issues with this lab. Although tedious, I have been familiar with excel for years so formatting WV county data was relatively simple. I’m especially happy that we already had the data readily available from previous work as this sped up the process.
  • Notes
    • Removing decimal from numbers
      • Simply select the numbers you are looking to remove or add decimals from, select the numbers heading at the top of the doc, and add/remove based on the window options.

Lab Log 2, Sep 17th (updated)

  • General Issues
    1. Linking all of my websites correctly
      1. Important to correctly name files as specified
    2. Creating a lablog on this website
      1. Linking student google accounts will give you free access to the software
    3. Creating the map mashup with all the google locations
    4. Uploading KMZ files to a place google earth could access it.
  • Page Layout
    1. Home Page
    2. index page
    3. animation page
    4. map mashup
    5. To OWU main website
    6. To Krygier home page, useful for going back to schedule and syllabus
    1. Results
      1. Clear and concise representation of a website created for a map of the state of West Virginia.
      2. Easy to maneuver jump from different areas.
      3. Simple and clean to catch the eye.
    2. Discussion
      1. I found that it was very important to organize the webpages before jumping on blue griffon and messing with the content of what is on the websites. Playing with the codes in pure HTML format, although intimidating at first, became much easier in the long run.
      2. I also found that working through blue griffon after setting up the rest of the websites was extremely helpful as it made manually throwing the bonus content onto the web pages much less confusing.
      3. Successfully uploading the map mashup has easily been the most frustrating part of the lab (continued).
        1. Original mistake: saving the KMZ file into the wrong file type.
        2. Failing to upload the KMZ file into the public domain from filezilla so that google can access it.
        3. I also forgot to change the web page on the HTML website from the original Krygier information to my personal website link.

LAB LOG

September 3rd:

Overall Purpose of Map:

To show general population changes in the state of West Virginia over the last century.

Intended Audience:

Readers of a small, local newspaper> Likely to be an older demographic.

What I want the viewers to learn as a result of the map:

The drastic rise and fall of the state’s population over the past century with the boom and bust of the coal industry.

The final medium of the map:

Some kind of combination of a political and resource map.

The US census website had easily accessible information for the up-to-date years that I needed. However, the years past 2010 were extremely hard to find. It is very possible that these numbers are accurate but they are not as specific as I would like to be. This could be a problem but I could also round these numbers to match the numbers I had difficulty finding on the web
